Celebrate 50 Years With Tuck Everlasting
What is one book from childhood that you remember reading and loving? For me, it was ‘Tuck Everlasting’ by Natalie Babbitt. This book, which has just celebrated 50 years of being published, holds a special place in my heart, and I recently decided to revisit it.
What if you could live forever? In this timeless story, young Winnie Foster discovers a hidden spring in a nearby wood and meets the Tuck family, whose members reveal the spring’s astonishing life-changing power. Now Winnie must decide what to do with her newfound knowledge―and the Tucks must decide what to do with her. But it’s not just the curious girl who is interested in their remarkable tale. A suspicious stranger is also searching for the Tucks, and he will stop at nothing until he finds them and uncovers their secret.
What if you could live forever? That is the theme of this beautiful children’s book. However, as I’ve grown, my perspective has evolved. The world is constantly changing, and if I didn’t change with it, I would feel stuck. This book makes you think about this through a ten-year-old’s mind. When I was younger, I romanticized this book, wanting Winnie to wait for Jesse and imagining a beautiful love story between them. Now, I feel more like Tuck. I enjoy the little things in life and am happy to be in my little bubble of family or my bookstore. I wouldn’t want the stress of moving every ten or twenty years. This story has changed for me, but that’s not a bad thing. I still love this story and will read it to my kids. I don’t picture myself as Winnie, like I did when I first read it. I don’t even picture myself as Jesse or Miles but Mr. Tuck. I also forgot about the role the toad played in the book. I loved that it was in the beginning and also the last scene. Overall, I still love this book, and it’s still a classic. It will forever have a space on my shelf!
