Char read and now reviews ‘Road Of Bones’
Retellings are really popular. The most common ones are ‘Beauty and the Beast’, and ‘Cinderella’, however its always fun when you can find others. ‘The Road of Bones’ by Demi Winters is another retelling. This one is ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf’ with a viking flair.
Silla Nordvig is on the run. The queen of Iseldur wants Silla. So to bring Silla to her she has sent people after her. When Silla’s father is killed she does the only thing she knows, to run. Silla know that if she takes the easy way out she will be caught and brought to her death by the queen. So She decides to take the Road of Bones. This thousand mile long road is haunted by war bands, creatures of darkness and murderers, but this is the only way to slow down the people looking for her. After barely surviving the first strip of the road, Silla joins a group of viking mercenaries. She now has to win over Axe Eyes and avoid Wolf. Otherwise she might not survive the road. Will she make it to Kopa, her final destination?
This book was picked up because well, vikings. I love stories that include vikings and that are also retellings. One of the first things I noticed about Silla is that she has an addiction. The amount of times she references leaves is just annoying. I will say that once you realize that the leaves are bad and some of the history behind them it helps you to understand why Silla is that way but at first its a bit much. I loved the BloodAxe crew! Ilas is my favorite character through out this book. His banter mixed with all the serious was a perfect addition to the book. I also thought that this book was a lot longer than it should have been but I weirdly enjoyed that about it. I also found that this book was everything I needed in the moment. I needed an imperfect couple. In most romances its very obvious how things are going to go and I liked that this book had a little bit of a slow burn and then the betrayal.
