Char Reads And Reviews Nevermore Bookstore

Independent bookstores are more than just repositories of words on a page; they are havens that beckon with their unique charm and warmth. ‘Nevermore Bookstore’ by Kerrigan Byrne and Cynthia St. Aubin is a perfect embodiment of this, with its own delightful quirks that make it a must-visit for any book lover.

Cady took over the Nevermore bookstore after her Aunt passed away. Now, she has to struggle with her building falling apart and trying to keep not just her home but also her bookstore afloat. If it weren’t for her weekly calls with a client named Fox, she probably would have had to close the doors a while ago, but when a break-in happens, things start to get fishy.

Fox has problems. The first is that he’s uncontrollably drawn to a bookstore owner, with what he’s only talked about on the phone, and the other is that he can’t stand being confined to a town or building. He needs the fresh air and mountains like a fish needs water. That is until he hears a break-in over the phone. He rushes to help a girl he’s never seen and can’t seem to keep away. The call to be near her is as loud as being in the wild.

Owning a bookstore can be fun and rewarding, but it has its downsides. While the downsides are minimal for me, I can’t help but understand some of Cady’s struggles. I enjoyed that the characters had disabilities but didn’t let them define how they lived. They gave them their names and cursed them all the time. The character growth in this book was so well done and enjoyable to read. It was a battle that kept you engaged. The bookish quotes and references were so on point and thrown in there with such grace that you could tell that the characters and authors also love reading and what they do. I had little hope when reading this book, but it surprised me so much, and I am pleased to have read it. I recommend that you pick it up. Just like the quote on the cover says, “Effortlessly funny and engaging,” It truly is. I was sucked in from the very first chapter!
