Char Reviews ‘Friends With Benefits’

Chronic pain, a reality for 21% of adult Americans, is a central theme in ‘Friends with Benefits’ by Marisa Kanter. The main character, Evie, grapples with this daily. This insightful book presents a character who, like many of us, navigates the challenges of everyday life while striving to fulfill their dreams.

Evie, having just lost her job, faces an uncertain future. However, when she is accepted into a program in her field, she refuses to let her chronic illness be a barrier. Despite the potential health setback, she bravely forges ahead, a testament to her resilience.
Theo’s roommates are moving out, and he can’t afford his apartment. When long-time friend Evie needs help, Theo is there. But when their plans hit a snag, they decide to get married. This way, Evie can be on Theo’s healthcare, and Theo has a roommate to help pay for the bills. Can they keep their feelings in check and stay friends, or will it become more?

It’s common knowledge now that I don’t shy away from a cute romance. It’s my go-to when I want to read but have just finished a book. I enjoy the quick reads and the characters. So, it was no surprise when I picked this book up. What I enjoyed the most was the evolution of the characters’ relationship. So obviously, when they decided to get married and keep everything the same but live together, I was already in love with the story. Evie’s health is a massive theme in the book, and it’s done well. I also loved how Theo knew how to care for her when she had the flair-ups. The relationship between them felt so real and believable. The romance tropes I tend to fall for are a marriage of convenience and friends to lovers. Sometimes, I want to shake the characters and tell them that they will end up together because, in the beginning, they always try to keep things the same, and it never does. Surprise, but not really. I found the book to be a heartwarming and engaging read, and I believe it will resonate with many readers.
