Char Talks About ‘A Language Of Dragons’
Are you experiencing a book hangover after reading “Onyx Storm”? Do you need another story filled with dragons, war, and a touch of romance? If so, “A Language of Dragons” by S.F. Williamson is the perfect choice. This book features a class system, dragons, an enemies-to-lovers trope, and much more.
Vivian Featherswallow follows the rules until she doesn’t. While coming to grips with what she did, she still tries to do what she thinks is right. In her 2nd class station, she worries for her now 3rd class friend. All she has to do is prove to her parent’s colleagues that she should be interning with them, and then everything will work out. Sadly, that meeting doesn’t go as she hoped; her parents are arrested for being rebels, and Viv is thrown into a world of chaos. Now, what can she do? Free a captured dragon and set off a war to try and free her parents? What could go wrong? She thought she could get away, but now she is sentenced to try deciphering how the dragons can talk to each other without actually talking. Can she save everyone she loves, or will she die trying to understand something she shouldn’t?
Dragon books have been quite popular over the last couple of years, and I’ve read quite a few of them. While I often find myself drawn to stories featuring dragons, I also seek out strong fantasy elements. This particular book, which has a darker academic feel, really captivated me with its characters. Although I wanted to see more interaction between the dragons and humans, I still found the characters compelling. I often wished I could be a part of the story to provide some input, though, of course, that isn’t possible.
The romance between Vivi and Atlas was particularly endearing, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the book. There were also characters I loathed—though I won’t name them, I’m confident that if you read this book, you’ll feel the same way. Overall, this debut novel was exceptionally well written, and I hope everyone gives this author a chance.
