Meet Dewdrops Stained Glass

  1. What is your name and business name?

Emily Thoma, Dewdrop Stained Glass

  1. How did you get into this medium?

I currently actively practice watercolor, crochet, and stained glass.

Watercolor was a childhood favorite of mine. I used to sit at a fisher-price table, following  along with Bob Ross, confused as to why my watercolor on paper art didn’t look like his oils on canvas. I reconnected with the medium when I was a student going for my BFA. My college didn’t offer official watercolor classes, but I used it in many of my works anyway. I feel very connected to my inner child whenever I work with it.

Crocheting amigurumi animals is something I started doing in 2010 as a college freshman. I was originally going for a medical laboratory science degree and felt deeply emotionally isolated and discontent due to multiple things going on in my life at the time. Drafting my own crochet patterns provided me an artistic outlet, and making things that made other people happy brought me joy.

Stained Glass is my most recently learned medium. My mom (Juju’s Studio) practiced stained glass as I was growing up. After receiving my bachelor of fine art I started imagining patterns I wanted to see done in the medium of stained glass. I eventually asked her to teach me. I find the medium to be a perfect balancing act of creativity and technical skill.

    What got you into art?
My mom is an artist and provided me a lot of creative outlets as I grew up. I’ve worked with many mediums throughout my 32 years and plan on continuing that exploration for as long as I’m able.

  2. What made you want to sell your art?

I first started selling my amigurumi art when I went to college. It was to make some extra money as a student, but I quickly found so much fulfillment in knowing that others find enough joy from something I created that they’d want to spend their hard-earned money on it.

  1. What do you want people to know about your art?

My art is about finding beauty in the small things that surround us in our daily lives, sometimes in the dark and strange. Taking small moments to be mindful, to notice what’s around you, and to appreciate it.

  1. Are you a reader?

Yes, I read!

  1. What do you like to read?

I enjoy reading fantasy romance the most.

  1. DO you have a favorite author?

I don’t think I currently have a favorite author. Maybe Kerri Maniscalco as I’ve never been disappointed by any of her books, and I’ve read them all!

  1. If you could recommend any book or series what would it be?

There’s no way I could only recommend ONE book or series. The standouts from what I’ve read this year that I’d recommend are “A Fragile Enchantment” by Allison Saft, and the “One Dark Window” duology by Rachel Gillig. But I have more!
