What Char Thinks About The Twelfth Knight
What were you in High School? The jock? The Nerd? The Cheerleader? In Alexene Farol Follmuth’s book The Twelfth Knight, It has it all. This YA romance brings the myth of King Arthur and high school to a new light.
Twelfth Knight follows Viola Reyes, a girl who knows what she wants. She wants her tabletop gaming group to do her story, and she doesn’t want to be overlooked just because she’s a girl and sometimes comes off as a terrible person. When her friend asks her to be more “likable,” the tables quickly turn. Now she’s alone, and the only one who seems to see her is an annoying school president and football star, Jack Orsino. So when he starts playing her favorite game, she tests the limits.
Jack Orsino is the football star and the most liked person in school. When Jack gets injured during a game, his whole life is thrown. Now, his future of going pro is feeling farther away from possibilities. It’s when Jack’s friend suggests he blow off some steam in a game based on the world of King Arthur. Once he finds that he’s good at the game, he finds an online companion who happens to be none other than Viola, and he does not know this. Viola starts to get to know Jack as they play the game together and catches some feelings. What will happen when Jack finds out she’s been playing the game with him all this time?
I picked up this book because I have been following Reese Witherspoon’s book club for a while now, and this was the first YA in a long time. So once it came into the store, I had to get it. I ended up loving Viola’s cranky attitude and her way of seeing things. I also related to her because I was the weird girl who went to conventions like MagicCon and proudly still did when possible. I also really enjoyed the growth that Jack went through. I have never experienced a massive injury that could change the outcome of my future, but I could believe how he handled things. I also liked that the characters seemed like real people you’d see in high school, at least when I was in high school.
